Diagnosing Misfire on Ford Ranger
Being smart about diagnosing a misfire and not throwing parts at it until root cause is confirmed.
Download Forscan via their website (Forscan.org) or through Apple/Android app stores.
I’m using an ObdLink Mx for android. It appears the newest version Mx+ works with iPhone now:

If you decide to use a different Bluetooth adapter you need to make sure it can communicate on J1850 PWM protocol. That’s the pre CAN protocol for older Ford ObD2 systems. A lot of adapters don’t (obdlink ones can and so does BAFX products ones)

Your lights might vary in cap style and how to remove bulbs (some have a little latch). Any type of silicone dialectic grease should work, I just happen to have a tube of the Permatex brand as I use it on spark plug connections. You can also just fill the entire cavity with silicon grease and then install the bulb. This will cause grease to squeeze out the rear of the socket (where wires come i...

I had a 2005 Honda Element flutter sound that seemed to be kind of intermittent but more like it changed loudness from day-to-day then all of a sudden one day it didn't work and then it came back on and then it didn't work another day and came back on a couple days later but no rhyme or reason for quitting so my first assumption of dropping debris into the fan when I took out my cabin air filter to change it seems to be a dead theory now. I'm wondering if that sound was the beginning of the end to the motor but the motor operated fine and I didn't get any grinding or screeching sounds just a little flutter sound like a leaf stuck in there so for the record I have not cleaned it out I haven't even taken it out. I don't think it's the relay under the hood or even the fuse under the dash that powers the relay because they both protect several functions and those other functions work. I'm going with a plug connection or a dying fan motor. Does anyone have any insight or does anyone have a link to a video that demonstrates a little flutter sound and maybe a solution to it?

thanks anthony. same issues and have not pulled the head yet but from the intake view and top view i have to say itself looking like we got a an outbreak of resessed valves. '03 ranger xlt 2.3 liter symptoms were similar to yours. Initially from the no more good forum posts i started with iac valves, to intake. everything checked out normal until i open her up . Also will be using a locsl machining shop ..or who knows maybe a new head . i love my ranger. regards and thanks again for the great informational video.

Can you explain me more about the 5R55E about the overdrive gears (2nd and 5th) My ranger after passing 40mph starts flashing the OD/Off light and struggles to go from first gear to second gear also it never reaches to 5th gear, when im in a highway my cruise speed is 60 and my engine is at 3000 rpm, but two days ago after a heavy rain my truck hardshifts first to second like before but without reaching 40 miles and without the flashing OD/Off My fluid levels are ok, i don't have leaks from the trans or anything weird, I would be very glad if you can help me!!!

First thing you need to do is after the od light flashes you need to have the codes read. As soon as you turn the truck off it resets transmission codes

Hey Anthony, thank you on behalf of all the replies you have made. I know replying takes away from your valuable time, but I have a question. I have an 06 4.0L 4x4 XLT which I believe is a 5R55E tranny. I recently had went onto the highway and it seemed as if I started at 2nd gear. Soon after I got off the highway O/D started flashing. It may seem as if I am slipping gears. When I turned off my truck everything went back to normal. What do you recommend? Should I follow the tutorial on the band adjustment? Thank you !

Interesting conversion. I recently converted mine to a 500w spindle. There are a few advantages to this- - the motor is brushless - more power for the same size - more accurate speed control- it is a synchronous motor (the video shows yours slowing down under load). Did you not consider making the pulley in the lathe? I made mine half the size of the largest pulley on the lathe shaft- so my 12000rpm (max) motor can drive the shaft at 6000rpm- the max speed shown in the Unimat manual. Why the largest? Maximum torque. I replaced the whole bracket, since the lay pulleys are not needed. This avoided the need for adapter plates, etc.

Will it fix my problem I have my o/d flashing and when it does it shifts into 2nd hard and doesn’t like to stay in o/d on the highway, would this fix the problem for mine since it’s 2nd gear and 5th or would it be internal or tcm related, I haven’t checked codes yet and it has an engine light but the o2 sensors arnt hooked up so idk if that’s affecting it either

Just a slight rpm drop when the a/c is first turned on,barely noticeable. Normal operation as of now. This issue along with a shutter during down shifts while coming to stop has disappeared. Worth looking into imho.
